I needed a filler object a couple of nights in January so I
selected Thor’s Helmet even though I really didn’t have the best telescope
setup (too short a focal length at 1000mm).
But what the heck, better shooting an image than having the “RoboDome”
sitting idle. On the good side the setup
gives a wide field view of the helmet at the expense of lower resolution.
Thor’s helmet is formed from a massive Wolf-Rayet star at
its center which is in a pre-supernova stage of star evolution. The bubble is about 30 light years in
diameter and 15,000 light years distant in the constellation Canis Major.
