Sh2 298   LRGB

Sh2-298 (NGC 2359, IC 468, Gum 4, LBN 1041, Thor’s Helmet) is an emission nebula located approximately 15,000 light-years away in Canis Major. The nebula is created by the center Wolf-Rayet star HD 56925.

Luminance – 12x600s – 120 minutes – binned 1x1
RGB – 8x300s – 40 minutes each – binned 2x2

240 minutes total exposure – 4 hours

Imaged over five nights in October, November and December, 2013 at the Danville Conservation Area (New Florence, Missouri) with a SBIG ST-8300M on an Astro-Tech AT90EDT at f/6.7 603mm.

I also imaged the area on December 26th with a Canon T2i with an f/3.5 50mm lens. The result of 22x180s exposures is an image 24.7 x 16.5 degrees. Thor’s Helmet is to the right of center. Other objects include:

M46 and M47 – center towards the top
M50 – bottom right
M98 – top left
